Babiche-Style Deck Chairs
Chairs are made of locally sourced black ash or, when available, repurposed tank wood. This material gets its name from the 19th and early 20th Century practice of pickling foods in massive wood tanks made of old growth Cypress. These trees were selected for their resistance to rot, impossibly straight grain, and freedom from knots. As a result, the South’s coastal cypress forests were decimated.
Babiche-style deck chairs are built without metal fasters; all joints are wedge-locked mortise and tenon or saddle-cut reinforced with dowel pegs. Seat and back rests are babiche; hand woven raw hyde lace that is allowed to dry and then soaked with spar varnish for weather resistance.
